Today, our enduring legacy can be heard and seen everywhere from cars and homes to event venues and enterprise organizations.
Explore ten decades of engineering and design milestones and prepare to make your own history at HARMAN.
1920s
In 1928, the world's first talking movie featured HD loudspeakers by Lansing – the company that would eventually become HARMAN.
1940s
This decade marked the beginning of the work we still do today. In 1948, we created the first ever in-vehicle radio.
1960s
Woodstock was where quite a few firsts happened but in 1969, our company, JBL, powered that first historic concert.
1980s
In 1983, George Lucas selected JBL to develop the first THX licensed theater audio system. In 1984, JBL premiered the first OEM branded car audio system. In 1989, we created the DigiTech Whammy – the first foot-controlled pitch shifting guitar pedal.
2000s
Three JBL engineers won Academy Awards in 2002. Then in 2004, HARMAN was the first company to enable Bluetooth wireless connectivity in a car.
2020s
In 2022, JBL’s exceptional ability to understand and anticipate customer needs propelled the brand past the threshold of 200 million headphone units sold.
1930s
Our innovations were recognized early. In 1937, MGM-Lansing won the first of two Academy Awards for their unique sound systems.
1950s
Here, we really got going. In 1953, Harman Kardon introduced the world to the FM tuner. Then, in 1956, Sidney Harman bought out Bernard Kardon and HARMAN International was created.
1970s
We had more breakthroughs in music in this decade. First, in 1970, JBL co-developed the “Wall of Sound" for the Grateful Dead. Then, in 1971, DBX created products that captured the realism of live performance in recorded music.
1990s
In 1998, HARMAN made road trips even easier when we created the first combination radio, CD, and navigation system. Also, in 1999 the HK SoundSticks systems debuted in the MoMA.
2010s
In 2014, we won our third Grammy®. One year later, we won Microsoft Partner of the Year for Intelligent Systems & Services. 2017 saw two major milestones: we won nine CES Awards for product innovation; HARMAN was acquired by Samsung.
