About the Role

The Component Engineer is responsible for driving component technology portfolio management, standardization, and component preference strategy to support the efficiency, quality, supply chain resiliency, and productivity of Harman products within the Automotive division (all products, regions, and customers).

Component types within the scope of component engineering are semiconductor, discrete, passive, and a select group of E-mechanical (connector, fan, switch) components.


Your Team

This position will report to the Component Engineering Manager and will be an individual contributor role without direct or indirect reports.

What You Will Do

  • Drive cross function team to define and continuously evolve component preference strategy and standardization
  • Research and review automotive electronic parts specifications, standards and support the component selection and application in Harman products
  • Research and study new / emerging technologies, support category team on new supplier identification and development, conduct supplier technological assessment.
  • Manage global component master database, continuously evolve corporate process and rules to support business needs
  • Early involvement in design activities or issue resolution, act as linking pin between designers, manufacturers and procurement providing advice and guard the balance between performance, quality, cost and timing requirements for components used in HARMAN’s Automotive products
  • Provide component expertise support to global design centers and manufacturing sites on component application, design review, failure analysis, PCN, shortage response
  • Support business to identify, analyze and qualify interchangeable parts from different sources to supply chain resiliency and productivity
  • Provide added value support to engineering team on component selection, application, failure

What You Need

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in engineering – Electronic/Automation/ Micro-Electrics or related majors.
  • 8+ years hands-on experience and expertise with discrete semiconductor devices and Integrated Circuits (IC’s) – operational principles, specifications, design, manufacturing, testing, characterization, application, reliability, failure modes
  • 5+ hands-on experience in hardware design, especially in communication and power circuits.
  • Good understanding of Circuit Board (PCB) design and surface mount (SMT) manufacturing equipment, processes, and electronic component packages
  • Understanding of automotive Product Development Process, Supplier Change Requests (PCN/PDN) process, PPAP process and other common automotive quality procedures and stress test specifications (IATF16949, AEC-Q100/200, etc.)
  • Knowledge of supplier management practices, supplier industry, component market trends, cost drivers, and material cost saving techniques
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, strong analytical, interpersonal, presentation skills

What is Nice to Have

  • Master’s degree in engineering
  • Solid theoretical and practical background in electrical engineering, with exposure to mechanical engineering and products, and is adaptable to a wider range of tasks and can function effectively in an engineering resource role within a matrix organization
  • Experience or good understanding of schematic design and PCB layout
  • Understanding of passive components, microcircuit, hybrid, semiconductor, and discrete device fabrication process
  • Understanding of the global supply chain and component cost structures
  • Working knowledge of any PDM/PLM/ERP applications
